Indonesia

Rippling across the equator for nearly 5000km, Indonesia encompasses more than 17,000 islands.

Kabalana Surf Camp

This luxurious beachfront villa, opened in 2014, is designed to give up to twelve guests their best surf holiday: A tropical garden with swimming pool, BBQ, chill-out area and a projector to watch videos. On top of this, the beach and the surf are right outside the door. What more can you ask for?

The waves that break in front of the camp are mellow and perfect for beginners. If you are more experienced, you can go to the end of the beach and surf “the Rock”, which is one of Sri Lankas best waves for advanced surfers. There are plenty of good surf spots South of Ahangama that can be reached with a local “tuk-tuk” (taxi).

Kabalana Surf Camp has two double rooms with private bathrooms. Sleep like a king or a queen and wake up to freshly brewed coffee and local produced tea. Sharing room is a great way to meet new people. Villa Kira has two dorms that can accommodate four people each. This is the perfect option for those who are travelling alone, with a group of friends or with the family.

The Villa offers hang-out areas in gazebo, on balconies or in sunbeds, all of them with a stunning view over the coastline. You can also enjoy their private gardens for sunbathing, activities and fun. After a long day on the water, there is no better way to soothe sore muscles than hitting the swimming pool or in the Jacuzzi.

This part of Sri Lanka is also known for its rich culture and stunning nature. There are many tourist attractions worth seeing, such as the old temples and other cultural heritages. You can spot several wild animals, including leopards, elephants, crocodiles and blue whale. The team arrange safari excursions directly from the camp every Friday. Ahangama is a small surf village three hours south west of Sri Lankas capital Colombo, and 40 minutes south of the more popular Hikkaduwa. It is a charming place with a good atmosphere and a small selection of unique shops.

Monday to Monday Surf Camps: One, Two or Three Week Camps ONLY.

Food and Drink

A breakfast buffet is included each morning and dinner is included five days a week. Common dinners are arranged other days as well if you want to join. Everyone is welcome to participate so even if you are travelling by yourself you will always have someone to eat with.

Surfing at Kabalana Surf Camp

The reason the team started a surfcamp in Ahangama is because of the easy access to different breaks, both for beginners and advanced surfers. The waves are a mixture of Costa Rica and Bali. There is everything from mellow beach breaks to heavier reefs at walking distance from the camp. The whole coast is filled with waves so there are always opportunities to find an uncrowded spot! The main surf season runs between November and April. After this comes the wet season and higher winds. You can certainly still surf - infact those more advanced surfers may appreciate the less crowded waves! But generally the best time to visit this region is between Nov and Apr.

Reviews of Kabalana Surf Camp

This holiday was somewhere between serene relaxation and extreme exertion. Lessons were tiring but once they are over you have all day to explore or just relax in the villa, most people tend to get a free surf in in the afternoon though. There are good activities organised which are included in the price or only a small amount extra. I left Sri lanka feeling fitter, healthier and a better surfer - target achieved!
