“If you’re looking for a stylish sanctuary with that miles-from-anywhere feeling, head for the Kandooma Island Resort.” Location-wise, this is a tropical island fantasy come true. Kandooma is reachable only by speedboat from nearby Male, is a hideaway and a half – all turquoise waters and lush Kandoo trees, hence the name.
And because it’s best known for its sea life, you’re in a great spot to explore the nearby dive sites. Or, if you want to stay a little closer to the surface, the clear waters offer up top conditions for a swim or snorkel. Turtles, mantas, rays and even dolphins, call this stretch of water home, so you’re in for a treat. Plus, Kandooma has plenty dive sites nearby including Kandooma Thila, Kandooma Caves and Kandooma Corner - all accessed by boat..
Back on dry land, meanwhile, you’ll find a collection of low-slung, thatched-roof beach villas. All of them come with large picture windows – because when you’re in such a beautiful spot, you’ll want to invite the outside in. Décor wise, think modern beachside chic - whitewashed floors, crisp cotton bed linen and light muslin curtains. Things are simple, but luxuriously so. Trimmings come in the form of flatscreen TVs, indoor and outdoor power showers, and iPod docking stations. Some villas are dotted around the water’s edge, while others hover above the coral on stilts. Hang out on your own private sundeck or relax in a partially submerged hammock at high tide.
And when only total tranquillity will do, head for the spa. This state-of-the-art wellness centre offers a huge menu of treatments. Drawing on traditional therapies from India, Thailand and Bali, there’s plenty to soothe the soul here. You’ll also find all the usual staples - a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and fully-equipped gym.
Rooms have king-size or twin beds, air-conditioning, indoor and outdoor shower, private living area with day bed and hammock, flatscreen satellite TV, radio, iPod dock, Wi-Fi, telephone, fresh tea and coffee, citrus press, hairdryer, newspapers, outdoor living area and sea view.
