This summer jump on board our exclusively chartered boat to the remote surf breaks of the Maldives. Your guide, Chris Thomson is a BSA level 4 surf coach (elite coach), will be on hand to provide you with useful tips. The tour leaves London on the 31st April 2011 and returns on the 11th April, a full ten nights on board. Numbers are limited to 8 surfers to allow for maximum wave count!
The boat trip in the Central Maldives focus around the islands of The Meemu, Thaa and Laamu Atoll, here waves are typically fun right hand point breaks, with a number of left breaking waves. All very fun, and suitable for all surfers. The surf around the Central Maldives is not super powerful, but provides the odd chance of a barrel and long fun walls. The surf is typically shoulder to head high which make these trips ideal for all intermediate and advanced surfers. We would request that all surfers can bottom turn and be happy in shoulder high surf.
The majority of surf breaks on and around Meemu, are East facing, which makes this an ideal spot in the predominate south west winds. The nice thing about the Central Atolls is how close the spots are to each other, so finding good surf is easy. The Thaa Atoll picks up south east swell and may be even bigger than spots on east facing coastlines of other atolls. Due to its secluded location it is almost guaranteed that you will not even spot another surf charter during your stay. The spots are well protected from North to Northwest winds. Conditions may be fickle with other wind directions. This area will be chosen only in very stable weather conditions. Spots in the Laamu Atoll are spread from the south facing coastline along the east facing up to the north east corner where waves wrap around. As a result you will find spots protected from all wind directions except a rare straight easterly breeze.
In between surfs you will have the chance to fish, snorkel or laze in the hammock. We plan on surfing a few times a day at least.
Once on-board you can expect to tuck into plenty of fresh fish, curry and fresh fruit. Evening meal on the first night in Male is not included in the price.
The surf charters to the Central Atolls are great for all surfers who can catch un-broken waves and bottom turn. Due to the mellow nature of these waves, they are perfect for really improving, long perfect walls, tropical sunshine and 28c water. Sounds amazing, and it is!
In the central atolls of the Maldives islands, standard waves are long clean rights with size varying between shoulder and head high. During the summer (April-October), it's never flat. We discovered 15 potential spots we are all classic waves, and totally uncrowded!
Here are some surf spots to Google! Yin Yang (Right), Mada's (Left), Mushroom rock (Right), Tsumami rights (Right), Tsumami lefts (Left), Bedhuge (Right), Langon Bank (Right); Shirukandu (Left); Mikado (Right), Finnimas (Left), Footaru (Peak), Hirifaru (Peak), Bowling Alley (Left); Biddies (Right), Bibeacons (Right).
Shallow conditions for barrells can be found but even these are surfed over pretty even and soft coral reef. You can expect a few 6-10ft swells during monsoon time.
