The Indian Ocean covers 20% of the water on the surface of the earth. Open ocean swell travels from the south, or better known as the roaring forties, which is a band of high, consistent west wind at the very bottom of the Indian Ocean. The swell generated by these winds travel thousands of kilometers to the shores of Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Maldives, thus creating good, high quality swell.
