During the winter time bigger swells travel down from the North Atlantic and light up the reef breaks on the north shore. During the summer the waves are much smaller, but break everyday thanks to a light trade wind. Lanzarote is of volcanic origin. The island was formed about 35 million years ago by the Canary hotspot. Alfred Wegener visited in 1912 and studied the island and showed how it fit in with his theory of continental drift. The island, along with others, emerged after the breakup of the African and the American continental plates.
